“My Heart Is an Alligator”

A beautiful view
from life’s river banks:
Love grows in time,
but anger disappears…
If I think about a person
who slighted me years ago,
my anger from that moment
will be gone in a decade’s
fortnight or less than a lifetime.
I may still feel sad,
but I don’t feel the intensity,
my teeth, once sharpened
on the stones of hate,
no longer exposed.
But what about the love
that I have for my pets,
friends, family?
Like the universe expands,
my heart is an alligator–
continuous growth.
If I could remind
myself
of this fact,
during the next
sparks
of anger.
May I find
my heart’s
alligator,
may I
swim
to shore.
